A level
This is work from my A-level sketchbook based around exploring watercolour and ink in traditional Chinese paintings and how its use has change of time. I explore the techniques of Wu Guanzhong, a traditional Chinese painter, and Meilo So, a modern illustrator, and reference them to develop my own work and technique using the media.
Preliminary studies
Initial sketches exploring the combination of watercolour and ink, experimenting using different techniques with both waterproof fine liner and quill and ink.
Developing my technique with reference to the way a Chinese painter and illustrator use the media.
Looking at the differences between how a Chinese artist, an illustrator and I use the media as well as combining the different techniques I have explored into one piece.
Detail
Further studies developing my work, refining how specific areas are painted.
Initial studies investigating sumi ink, looking at landscapes and Chinese calligraphy.
Refined piece combining what I have learnt while developing my own work.
Work looking at creating books using Chinese book binding and experimenting with different perspectives to sketch and paint from.
Sketches experimenting with how best to integrate my work with traditional Chinese methods, looking at both hanging scrolls and hand scrolls.
Final piece
Initial sketches planning my final outcome based on combining my work on watercolour, fine liner and sumi ink in a hanging scroll format.
Photos taken showing the progression of the final piece from drawing to painting.
